Back Removal

Removing the Ceramic Tile Velvet Backing Tutorial

Our tiles arrive ready to hang or to place on a table-top. The back is covered in a fine velvet black covering that also has a built-in hanger and fold out stand.

However, we realize that these tiles are perfect for construction purposes such as kitchen, bathroom, and garden tile work.

The backing may be easily removed through a quick and painless process. The adhesives gluing the back covering and the actual tile itself is very water soluble.

Simply place the tile in a container where it may be fully submerged in tap water. I used my bathtub for convenient reasons. Just make sure that the whole backing is completely underwater.

Let it sit for around 10 hours, you may try and peel it off sooner if you are in a hurry. The glue should be dissolved at this point and the backing should be practically falling off.

Safety discard the velvet backing and give the tile back a good rinse with soap. As you can see, there are slightly raised grooves in the tile. This will help the tile adhere to the construction surface with tile glue.
